Re: WORLD CUP 2010..Road To africa
Sluggish Argentina Sneak Past Colombia
Los Albicelestes didn't impress but they claimed three valuable points that steer them closer towards South Africa...
Argentina knew that their fans demanded a comprehensive victory after suffering a 6-1 mauling to Bolivia in their previous World Cup qualifier in April, but Los Albicelestes struggled to get into the game and were outplayed by the visitors for moments during the encounter at the Monumental stadium.
Diego Maradona's side tried to play the ball around in the midfield, but with little luck, as the Colombians closed them down time and time again.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi couldn't find his form, and this greatly affected the production of the side, as they rarely threatened the Colombia goal and couldn't manufacture a single goal scoring opportunity.
Colombia, on the other hand, looked dangerous when moving forward and could have gone ahead with a long-range drive from Vladimir Marin and then another clear-cut effort from Wason Renteria.
Boca Juniors midfielder Fabian Vargas pulled the strings in the Colombia midfield and he also intercepted a number of important balls.
As the half progressed Argentina came more into the game, and this was because of Juan Sebastian Veron's influence. The Estudiantes de La Plata captain controlled the midfield and always pushed his side forward, providing the attackers with good balls.
However, in the 36th minute Colombia almost broke the deadlock when a powerful Radamel Falcao Garcia effort was blocked by Mariano Andujar.
Five minutes before the break Diego Maradona replaced the highly ineffective Sergio Aguero with Diego Milito. The Atletico Madrid attacker seemed to have a slight injury.
Minutes before the break, Messi could have been sent-off when he flung an arm into the face of Marin after receiving some harsh treatment.
In the second period Argentina livened up a touch, but they continued to lack imagination when moving forward.
Seven minutes in Argentina almost went ahead when a long-range Messi free-kick struck the crossbar.
In the 55th minute Daniel Diaz put Argentina ahead when he volleyed home a Veron corner kick.
The goal seemed to motivate the two-time World Champions, and Messi in particular, who breezed through the Colombians with speed and determination.
Minutes later a powerful Javier Mascherano drive from an acute angle was kept out by David Ospina. Mascherano was having a good game in the centre of the Argentina midfield.
Towards the end of the game Colombia pressed in an aim to draw level and they came closest to doing this with a Camilo Zuniga thunderbolt that was saved by Andujar.
By no means did Argentina impress but they claimed three valuable points that move them closer towards South Africa.

New-Look Italy Cruise To Victory Over Northern Ireland
It was a routine win for the Azzurri...
6 Jun 2009 21:59:07
Three wonder debut goals from Rossi, Foggia and Pellissier handed Italy a comfortable victory over Northern Ireland in Pisa this evening…
Marcello Lippi opted to test out some new blood as Italy prepared for their Confederations Cup campaign in South Africa. The big news in the pre-match build up was the first start for young Inter starlet Davide Santon, who made his full international debut at just 18 years of age.
First Half
Italy started brightly as they looked to attack the visitors down the flanks. After just two minutes Santon showed why he is regarded so highly on the peninsula as he underwent a mazy run down the right, to penetrate right into the heart of the Irish defence. Unfortunately his lay off to Mascara was rushed and the Catania forward was easily dealt with by Casement.
As the Azzurri started to get into their stride they began to push the visitor’s back behind the ball. After just 15 minutes David Healy was beginning to look more and more isolated up top as his side made heavy work of joining him in attack.
The first real chance of the game fell to Pazzini on 17 minutes, when the Sampdoria forward was given a free shot from the edge of the box. After a wonderful floated assist from Montolivo, Pazzini sprayed over and should have tested the keeper from such a range.
Less than three minutes later however the Azzurri broke the deadlock through a wonderful strike from Giuseppe Rossi. After some clever link up play with Mascara, the Villarreal hitman carved through the Northern Ireland backline and smashed a shot in off the post from 20 yards.
As the half wore on Lippi’s side started to take a hold on the game and the visitors began to look increasingly short of ideas. With a buzzing atmosphere from the Pisa crowd, La Nazionale appeared full of energy as they looked to push on for a second.
Just minutes before the break the Azzurri should have doubled after a great move down the right left Montolivo open for a crack on goal. Unfortunately his shot took a deflection on route and Tuffey managed to stab the ball clear with an outstretched leg.
Second Half
After Lippi opted to make four changes during the interval, the visitors looked to take advantage with their first clear cut chance of the game. As Carson threaded Little through on the box, the subsequent shot was straight at Marchetti who parried wide with little trouble.
It took just five minutes however for Lippi’s substitutes to make their influence felt, when Foggia doubled the scoring on 52 minutes. After receiving a square ball from Rossi, the Lazio winger skipped past Casement with his trademark dribble and finished off the move with a delightful chip over Tuffey.
Just 60 seconds later the Azzurri were handed a golden opportunity to the result beyond doubt when Tuffey came sliding out at the feet of an advancing Pazzini in the box. The Sampdoria man failed to convert the penalty as he watched his effort come crashing off the post to leave the scoreline at 2-0.
Italy continued to push forward and there were promising signs from Lippi’s choice of personnel. Pasquale Foggia continued to cause a nuisance down the right as he looked to run at the visitor’s backline at every possible occasion.
On 72 minutes Italy added a third to their haul with another wonder strike this time from Sergio Pellissier. As the ball was lofted in from the left by Brighi, the Chievo hitman controlled on his chest and fired home a wonderful overhead kick past Mannus at the near post. The Gialloblu striker was obviously moved as he celebrated a goal on his international debut with the rest of the side.
As the game drew to a conclusion the home side coasted to the finish line much as they had done for the previous 80 minutes. Pasquale Foggia continued to show glimpses of brilliance and Lippi’s men saw out what proved to be a comfortable victory.
Marcello Lippi was undoubtedly pleased as his experimental side demonstrated a desire to prove their worth in the build up to the Confederations Cup.

World Cup qual - Terry: England still improving
Eurosport - Sun, 07 Jun 12:44:00 2009
England captain John Terry believes the best is yet to come from his team under coach Fabio Capello following the 4-0 win over Kazakhstan in Saturday's World Cup qualifier.
England, who failed to qualify for Euro 2008, recorded a sixth consecutive qualifying victory in Group Six and are now seven points clear of Croatia with four matches to play, starting at home to Andorra on Wednesday.
While Saturday's performance was far from fluent, particularly in a torrid opening half hour, Terry said England were beginning to gel.
"I can assure you have not seen anything yet, there is far more to come from this team," Terry said after the victory in the Central Stadium.
"We are really relishing these games. There is a confidence about the side, a confidence that we are looking to maintain."
Importantly, Terry believes the English public are finally back on board after a strained relationship with their national team during the ill-fated reign of Steve McClaren.
"There were times when people were on our back a little bit and we took a lot of criticism, but we have ridden that out now and the fans are showing the appreciation of the football we are playing," Terry said.
There is certainly a business-like look to England these days. Gone is the light-hearted training ground atmosphere often witnessed under McClaren and his predecessor Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Capello, judging by his angry demeanour for much of the first half, is a far harder taskmaster and England's millionaire players seem to like his style.
"The boss has stressed the importance of maintaining the high standard that we have set," Terry said. "We are working extremely hard, but we are not there yet.
"We're in a good position, but taking nothing for granted. We've got Andorra at home, and they can sit back and make it difficult. If we can get the seventh win out of seven, it will be fantastic."
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, who set up the first two goals in Almaty, said there is no danger of England getting complacent with qualification not yet sealed.
"What we are all conscious about is qualifying for the World Cup. Missing out on the European championship was a massive blow," he told the FA's website. "It took the players a long time to get over it.
"What we need to do is pay the fans back and qualify for the World Cup."

Veron: The Most Important Thing Is For Argentina To Win
Ahead of the World Cup qualifier with Ecuador, "La Brujita" stated that obtaining results is most important...
8 Jun 2009 22:11:38
Juan Sebastian Veron, midfielder of the Argentine national team, affirmed to the press that "the results" and not "good football" will qualify them for the World Cup in South Africa.
Veron understands that Argentina didn't play well in their 1-0 victory over Colombia on Saturday, but he believes having claimed the three points was more important.
"What will take us to the World Cup are the results. The best we can do is not allow ourselves to get anxious about playing good football, we will concentrate on our objective and allow the individual quality of each one of us to move us closer to the ideal level of this team," said Veron.
The former Inter Milan, Manchester United and Chelsea playmaker thinks with "time" Diego Maradona's squad will live up to the expectations of the fans.
"I understand that the people and the journalists expect something more with the names we have, but the team will improve in a tactical aspect when the coach has sufficient time to work, when he knows us more as a team and when he knows what he wants."
In reference to the narrow victory over Colombia, Veron said that him and his teammates don't want to give any excuses for their poor performance because doing this "doesn't serve [us] to keep growing."

Robinho On Target As Brazil Down Paraguay
Brazil steered closer towards the 2010 World Cup after edging Paraguay 2-1 at the Estadio do Arruda in Recife...
Brazil started the stronger of the two sides and inside the first two minutes they already had two attempts on goal with efforts from Robinho and Kaka.
The five-time World champions dominated possession, but it was Paraguay who came closest to scoring when a powerful long-range drive from midfielder Carlos Bonet flew inches over the crossbar.
As the half progressed Paraguay came more into the game, and they almost went ahead in the 21st minute when an Osvaldo Martinez half-volley was saved.
Then, in the 24th minute, Paraguay took a surprise lead when a Salvador Cabanas free kick took a wild deflection off Elano and fooled a stranded Julio Cesar.
Three minutes later Brazil were presented with a free kick of their own, but Barcelona defender Dani Alves fired it over the bar. Despite the effort, Alves was having a fine game.
As the minutes ticked by, a desperate Brazil pushed forward at every opportunity, and five minutes before the break they were rewarded for their approach as Robinho drew them level when he met an Alves cross with a powerful finish at the back post.
Brazil commenced the second half in a similar way to the first, as they pushed forward in numbers searching for a goal.
Four minutes into the hal, Nilmar put the Selecao ahead when he reacted quickly to a rebound off a Paraguayan defender to slot the ball home.
Minutes later, Robinho almost added Brazil's third, but his swerving shot was brilliantly saved by an alert Justo Villar in the Paraguay goal.
Paraguay were restricted to long-range attempts and one of these almost found the back of the net through the always deadly Cabanas but it was palmed away by Julio Cesar. Cabanas was by far Paraguay's most lively attacker.
From here on Brazil dominated proceedings, and in the 79th minute Pato missed an incredible opportunity to score when he shot wide when the goal was at his mercy. The AC Milan ace should have done better.
Two minutes later Robinho missed another clear-cut opportunity after receiving a sensational ball from new Real Madrid signing Kaka.
In second half injury-time Pato was presented with another great chance to seal the three points, but once again he failed to take advantage of it.
If Brazil claim a victory in their next qualifier against arch-rivals Argentina in September they will secure passage into the World Cup of South Africa.
Team Line-ups
Brazil: Julio Cesar, Daniel Alves, Lucio, Juan, Kleber, Gilberto Silva, Felipe Melo, Elano (Ramires), Kaka, Robinho (Kleberson), Nilmar (Alexandre Pato)
Paraguay: Justo Villar, Dario Veron, Julio Caceres, Paulo Da Silva, Denis Caniza, Carlos Bonet (Edgar Benitez), Victor Caceres, Eduardo Ledesma (Sergio Aquino), Cristian Riveros, Osvaldo Martinez (Dante Lopez) and Salvador Cabanas
Goals: Salvador Cabanas (25'), Robinho (40') and Nilmar (50')

Re: WORLD CUP 2010..Road To africa
MATCH PREVIEW :
It is arguably the clash of the month across the whole world; Diego Maradona’s Argentina host this year’s Confederations Cup champions Brazil in a World Cup qualifier on September 5.
Brazil's Luis Fabiano tries to contain Argentina's Lionel Messi in a World Cup qualifierIt certainly couldn’t have been more crunching than that. This highly anticipated fixture falls at a moment when Argentina really need to put their World Cup campaign back on track, when the Brazilian look so confident and strong following their cup success in July, when the rivalry between Real Madrid’s superstar Kaka and Lionel Messi – now Europe’s best footballer of the year – has reached its peak.
It is difficult to pick up a favorite in this fixture although it is true that most people will go in for Brazil.
The Samba boys seem to have found their tonic after lifting the Confederations Cup trophy in South Africa two months ago.
It has been long since Brazil experienced defeat under Dunga. It takes us back to June 2008 when they endured their first defeat of this qualifying campaign.
Since then, things have shaped differently in the table. The 2002 World Cup Champions now top the group with 27 points from 14 games, and 5 points ahead of Argentina who seat fourth in the table.
An unconvincing goalless draw was all that both teams could manage in Brazil last year. Fans will definitely expect something better to come from their respective sides this time round.
Argentina: Not time to be charmed by the samba dance
Argentina’s World Cup winning captain, Diego Maradona, is experiencing strange things with his team. The 48-year-old coach enjoyed a bright start to his managerial career with the Albiceleste but these sweet moments now know some bitterness.
Two emphatic losses in three qualifiers is absolutely not the best result for the Argentines who are already looking forward to lifting the World Cup trophy in South Africa.
Expectations
A recent survey on the internet revealed that Brazilian people tip Argentina’s Lionel Messi well ahead of their own star Kaka in terms of skill value. However, the numbers of this poll will not count come September 5. What will matter for Messi’s Argentina is the result at the end of the 90 minutes.
The recently crowned European footballer of the Year is expected to dazzle against Brazil in this upcoming titanic clash. Messi was guilty of missing clear chances against Bolivia and Ecuador earlier this year. The young troublemaker will try not to repeat these mistakes against Brazil’s defense which includes the likes of Lucio and Maicon.
After a satisfactory 3-2 victory over Russia in August, Diego Maradona will be working around Argentina’s back line in order to repair the team’s problems in defense to boost Argentina’s chances of beating Brazil.
Brazil: The stars are many to be counted
Kaka, Robinho, Elano, Daniel Alves, Lucio, Maicon, Julio Cesar, Luis Fabiano… Well, so many star names make the Brazilian team as big as it is.Brazil's striker Adriano celebrates
They are all heroes of a successful Confederations Cup campaign in South Africa.
Adding to this list of superstars will be Inter Milan’s former striker, Adriano.
The forward has been called up by Dunga for Brazil’s qualifiers against Argentina and Chile after impressing with a tally of 10 goals in 16 games for his current club Flamengo.
How emotional of a return could this be for Adriano?
The striker is particularly sensational against Argentina. Good memories for Brazilian fans can recall Adriano’s injury time equalizer in the final of the Copa America in 2004 which Brazil eventually won.
In the final of the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany, Adriano scored a brace to help Brazil humiliate their hot rivals Argentina by four goals to one.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Lucas has also been added to the roster.

Argentina pula mengumpul 22 mata. - AP
