Baby with two heads born in Philippines

MANILA - Doctors at a Philippine hospital were Wednesday trying to save a baby girl born with two heads, officials said.



The baby was born late Tuesday and is now under observation at the neo-natal intensive care unit of the Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila.

A hospital spokeswoman said the baby was stable at the moment, but said she may die if tests proved both heads shared only one set of vital organs.

“The rate of survival will depend on the shared organ. If they only have one heart, they will not survive,” the unidentified spokeswoman told local radio.

Reports said the father Salvador Arganda was a tricycle driver. He and his wife, Chateria, already have five other children and there was no known history of twins in the family.

Officials at the hospital said the extra head appeared to be a twin of the girl who failed to fully separate during the development stage in early pregnancy.

“This is the first case of its kind here in the hospital,” one Fabella doctor said, but said other hospitals in Manila have in the past recorded similar cases.

Indonesia’s Conjoined Twins Die Of Respiratory Failure

Pekanburu, Riau. Conjoined twin boys born on Thursday have died from respiratory failure, hospital director Yulwirianti Moesa said on Tuesday.

Their unstable condition had made survival unlikely and they died at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Pekanburu’s Arifin Ahmad Regional Hospital, Yulwirianti said.

The unnamed boys, born at Puri Husada State Hospital in Tembilahan, Indragiri Hilir, Riau, were 43 centimeters long and weighed a total 3.2 kilograms at birth.

Yulwirianti said they had suffered from breathing difficulties and ultimately succumbed to respiratory failure.

The twins’ father, Badrun, said their remains were brought to Indragiri Hilir right away to be seen by their mother, Nurhayati.

“My babies are gone,” he told Antara. “My wife had never held the babies in her arms and now they’re gone.

“We had been waiting for nine years to have babies and we didn’t care what they looked like, we loved them,” Badrun said.

Doctors had earlier discovered critical problems with their vital organs. The twins initially appeared to share a single heart and one pair of lungs, as well as two arms and legs between them. Doctors suspected there might have been a second pair of the organs, but the twins’ condition prevented examination.

“Under the circumstances of having two heads, the babies should have had two hearts to survive,” said Nazardi Oyong, who led the medical team.

A baby with two heads has died because his parents could not afford to pay for his medical care.

The boy, named Kiron, was born on Monday to a 22-year-old mother in the Bangladesh town of Keshobpur.

When word spread, a huge crowd of at least 150,000 people surrounded the hospital hoping to see him.

Doctors said they could raise the money to take him 100 miles to the capital Dhaka, but warned there would be ongoing medical costs.
