Manchester United Cleared Over Paul Pogba Transfer - Report
The French teenager did not have an existing contract with Le Havre...
Oct 8, 2009 12:23:30 AM

FIFA has given the all-clear for 16-year-old Paul Pogba to be registered as a Manchester United player.

The teenager's previous club, Le Havre, had lodged a complaint with the world football governing body, alleging that United had induced Pogba to break his existing contract with the French club, in similar circumstances surrounding Gael Kakuta's transfer to Chelsea from Lens.

However, the presiding judge ruled in favour of the English champions, declaring that Pogba had not been contractually linked to Le Havre, and that United were not in breach of any FIFA regulations.

A statement on the Old Trafford club's official website read: "Manchester United is pleased to confirm that the Football Association has been authorised by FIFA to register Paul Pogba as a United player with immediate effect."

Le Havre are able to appeal the decision if they wish.

I think Maicon would be a brilliant addition to the team, hes basically a right sided Evra, quick with lots of power and of course the Brazilian flair and skill to go past defenders when he pushes forward, he was happy to leave in Summer but nothing materialized I think due to the fact Inter were asking for aroun 22million for his signature... I think it would be good news if we did sign him but tbh I think its speculation despite being talked up on Sky Sports, John O'shea is doing really well and Rafael will be back in the near future

A good article about Manchester United "fans"

Once Manchester United's 'fans' put down their prawn sarnies, they'll learn to applaud Dimitar Berbatov

By
David Maddock
Mirror Football

I wonder whether scientists have established a link between the consumption of shellfish and a fickle nature?

I ask only because the wildly fluctuating loyalties of a certain section of the Manchester United support leads me, naturally enough I feel, towards the subject of prawn sandwiches.

Old Trafford is home of some of the most passionate, loyal, committed supporters in world football. But its corporate scale and hard-business mentality means it also entertains those fans best described as football tourists - the Premier League equivalent of the camera-toting hordes that trample through Europe's great cities every summer.

It is these tourists who give the famous old stadium its eerie, soulless feel at times, and reduce the atmosphere to that of the cricket ground across the road during a rain delay.

It is a necessary evil of course, because United need their corporate glory-seekers to finance their lavish spending on a star-studded line-up, and I have nothing against them in principle. After all, football is there to be watched by everyone, not just the committed few.

What bothers me though, is that United seem to be attracting more and more of the sort of fan who has opinion without knowledge. They are the sort of 'fans' who cling onto bandwagons for grim death, and then happily switch to the set of horses galloping in completely the opposite direction.

Perhaps the greatest example is that of Ryan Giggs. Maybe five or even six years ago, there was a murmur of resentment against him, with so-called supporters suggesting he was past it and that he should be put out to grass.

Never mind the fact that statistically - and logistically - he is the greatest player in the club's history, that murmur grew to a swell, with even rational United fans calling for his departure, until 18 months ago it was hard to find anyone prepared to accept he was any good, never mind that he was in fact, still a bone fide genius (as I have to smugly say I did in the pages of the Mirror when everyone else was slaughtering him).

Now, of course, Giggsy is getting his dues, with the same fans who crucified him saying that the team can't do without him, and asking why the hell he was left out of the squad against Sunderland. It makes you weep.

The same applies to Darren Fletcher. Again, I do this without the 20-20 vision of hindsight, because for years I have argued (in print) until I was red in the face about his abilities, only to be shouted down that he was useless and must be Fergie's love child to keep his place in the team. Go on, admit it, how many of you said that?

Now he is the player whose absence cost United the Champions League final, the key ball-winning, ball keeping component in a midfield that cannot operate without him. Can't you just hear the sounds of those galloping hooves changing direction.

So, it is with a mixture of resignation and weary regret that I offer the latest defence of a United player, and suggest that already I can hear the faint stirrings of a bandwagon creaking towards reverse gear.

Dimitar Berbatov has been well and truly mullered by his own supporters, even though in his first season he helped win the Premier League and get his side to the Champions League final.

They said that Stephen Hawking does more running than him, that he is slower than a condom stall in Vatican City, and lazier than a squat full of students. Needless to say they suggested he was a complete waste of money and should be sold. Just like Fletch and Giggsy.

Now, after an inspired performance as an early substitute against Wolfsburg in the Champions League, those same critics are suggesting that, actually, he is a misunderstood artist, he is a technical genius with the gifts and vision of Cantona, and it must be true because Phil Neville said so on the telly, and he played with Eric, didn't he?

When United quite magnificently snatched an unlikely win at Wigan towards the end of last season, thanks to the energy and persistence of Carlos Tevez, I argued in a column then that in the long run, it was the artistry and technique of Berbatov that would serve United best, and not the misplaced enthusiasm of the Argentine.

Tevez is a crowd pleaser because he runs around like a headless chicken, apparently in the cause of his team. Yet Berbatov does far more running than people think - check the stats and you'll see he's always in the top two or three in his team for distance covered - it's just that he does it subtly and intelligently.

One day very soon, the bandwagon-jumpers will wake up to that fact, and realise that their centre-forward has an unworldly talent that other mere mortals can only marvel at... but only probably because they have been told by television that it's OK to support him now.

Then they'll go back to munching on their prawn sandwiches, looking for their next target. But then, they do say that shellfish can produce an allergic reaction

sapa sangka, carrick lagi byk medal dari lampard+gerrard+barry.. hehehehe

By NEIL CUSTIS

Published: Today

GEORGE BEST was once famously asked by a hotel porter 'Where did it all go wrong?'
At the time, Miss World was laying on the Manchester United legend's bed quaffing champagne - next to £15,000 they had won from a night at a casino.

Michael Carrick is not into the excesses of Best. But he is similarly incredulous at the barrage of inquiries about his career supposedly disappearing up a cul-de-sac.

For Carrick has the medals to prove he has been no flop at Old Trafford.

The Geordie midfielder has a Premier League winner's medal from each of the three seasons since he joined United from Tottenham in July 2006 and has also lifted the Champions League trophy.

By contrast, those keeping him out of the England side - Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry - can muster only three of those medals between them.

There have been two Premier Leagues for Lampard, one Champions League for Gerrard and nothing for Barry.

But still there is a feeling that, at the age of 28, Carrick has not yet cracked it.

Only last week, Alex Ferguson was explaining that Carrick had been left out of the United team in some of the early games because he always makes a slow start to a season.

With England, Carrick has been more out than in.

It is eight years since his debut and there was a four-year gap between his second and third caps.

He has still to play a minute of the current World Cup qualifying campaign, has never scored for his country and a return of 19 caps is paltry for a player of such pedigree.

Now, though, Carrick has a chance to stake his claim for a World Cup finals place in the upcoming games against Ukraine and Belarus - and he knows it is crunch time.

Carrick admitted: "I haven't won enough caps, I agree. I should probably have more.

"I don't really scratch my head about it. Things happen for a reason and it hasn't worked out with England as much as I would have liked.

"Maybe I've not played well at the right times or things haven't fallen for me.

"But what matters now is looking ahead and doing what I can to be successful in the future, trying to be positive."

Carrick has had a conversation with United chief Ferguson about his indifferent start. Yet he is adamant there is no axe to grind on either side, despite being left out again against Sunderland last weekend.

He added: "I've had a chat with the gaffer and he says I need a month or a few games under my belt before I start to hit top form.

"It wasn't a meeting or anything like that.

"We were just chatting and he said that was the case. That's fine by me.

"I've never had a problem with him.

"I've never gone to him with a problem, he has never come to me with a problem and the time I've had at the club has been successful.

"All the United midfielders are playing well and it's about rotating the squad. I've still played seven games or so, including both Champions League matches, which is as many as anyone.

"I'll probably start hitting top form right now.

"Everyone's different. It takes most players a few games to get that edge and then you're flying again. I really don't think it's a big issue.

"I've nothing to prove at all.

"I've been with United three years and it has been three good years.

"But it doesn't mean you're guaranteed a place in the team.

"You still have to play well enough. And that is the case for everyone."

So does he think he has a chance of making Fabio Capello's final 23 for South Africa?

Carrick admitted: "I've not really sat down and thought about the structure of the squad. It's more a case of 'I'm in the squad at the moment, I have to play well to stay there and, hopefully, I will play well enough to get into the team'.

"It has been a while since I started in a qualifier, so I hope the experience that I have gained with United in top European games will help my chances.

"England is different to United. I haven't played as much as I would have liked over a period of time.

"But I got a game in the last World Cup, which was great for me.

"I just didn't manage to nail down that place.

"Yet simply being part of the squad is a different feel.

"So I am confident, if and when I do get that opportunity, I will be able to perform well enough."

To play for England, though, Carrick must win a permanent place in the United team and may still have to see off further competition for club and country from midfield rival Owen Hargreaves if he returns to fitness.

Carrick declared: "Competition is good.

"It's down to me to play well enough. I'm going to play in some massive games for United throughout the season.

"I've played in the Champions League semis and final and the league deciders.

"You draw on your experience and have confidence in yourself. I haven't had any negative thoughts at all."

Maybe Carrick is too nice, lacking that hard edge dividing the good from the great.

He insisted: "Without blowing my own trumpet, you can't play in Champions League finals and win them or win Premier Leagues and play for Manchester United week-in, week-out, without being able to shoulder the expectations.

"Just because you're nice, it doesn't mean you can't be a top player.

"Maybe I'm not quite as nice as I look."
