Roma Ace Francesco Totti Hails Milan Legend Paolo Maldini
‘Er Pupone’ has heaped praise on the retiring Rossoneri skipper, but insists that Roma still need a victory at all costs this afternoon...
Paolo Maldini will say farewell to the San Siro crowd today, as Milan host Roma in the penultimate game of the Serie A season, and Lupi captain Francesco Totti has paid tribute to the 40-year-old icon.
“He is an extraordinary champion, a fantastic player who has gone through so many years in football that, meanwhile, has radically changed,” Totti told the Corriere dello Sport.
“In his role, I think he is one of the greatest in the history of football. But I don’t think he needs to go out with a win, that would not change much for him, whereas this match could change Roma’s fate for next season.”
Roma are still chasing a place in the Europa League, but Milan are also pushing for a win to secure an automatic berth for next term’s Champions League.
“It will be Maldini’s party, but we are focusing on spoiling it,” joked Totti.
“I am sure that Palermo will win their remaining games and will get to 61 points. So, if we only pick up four points, we will miss out. We have no alternatives and will play to win against Milan.”
Palermo are currently two points adrift of the Lupi and travel to Atalanta today, before facing Sampdoria at home on the final day, while Roma will host relegation-haunted Torino next weekend.

Milan Captain Maldini Is An Example To All - Carlo Ancelotti
The Rossoneri coach heaped praise on Maldini, but was disappointed by the loss to Roma...
Milan legend Paolo Maldini has waved goodbye to the San Siro for the last time in his professional career amid scenes of great emotion on and off the pitch, as Ancelotti explains a topsy-turvy day in the fashion capital.
The Rossoneri lost 3-2 to Roma, but Maldini, as always, was superb.
After the game, he ran a lap of honour to salute the fans at San Siro and then he exchanged hugs with his team-mates and coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Having played his last ever game at the world famous stadium, Ancelotti praised Maldini and shared his emotions after the captain's 901st appearance in a Rossoneri shirt.
"Today was like a drop in the ocean of emotion," said the coach.
"I don't know what happened. There was a great emotion regarding Maldini and he will remember the day for life. Maldini has had a great career and he is an example to everyone."Ancelotti was rather less pleased, however, with his team's performance, which leaves them with it all to do in Florence. They can, though, lose 1-0 to Fiorentina and still finish third, because they have a better head to head record.
"It was an important day for us but we have to do what didn't want to, by playing for the Champions League in Florence. We were not good today," added the coach.
"Future? There's not need to talk about this today. We will talk about this after the game in Florence."Club president Silvio Berlusconi also reflected on the Milan number 3's decision to call it a day.
"It's a shame about Maldini," he admitted.
Indeed it is, Silvio. Indeed it is.

Milan Consider Swapping Pirlo For Chelsea's Essien - Report
Il Diavolo are thinking about a swap deal which will see both men change places, but the move depends on Ancelotti's future...
Milan have been linked with a move for Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien in a deal which would see Andrea Pirlo move in the other direction, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.
The report suggests current coach Carlo Ancelotti will take the Italian midfielder to Chelsea at the end of the season if he joins the club, which, according to Italian press, looks likely to happen. Neither club have made an official announcement on that, but there is widespread belief that Pirlo will follow the Italian to Stamford Bridge.
Milan are preparing themselves for the possible change and they will attempt to swap Pirlo for Chelsea's Ghana international. Leonardo is being tipped to take the reins at Milanello, and voices suggest the Brazilian is keen on Essien who would be comfortable playing in any position around the middle of the park. In addition, the Chelsea man can play in front of the defence, giving the team extra options tactically.
The Rossoneri are expected to make an official announcement regarding Ancelotti's future on Monday, where they will have a clearer idea of possible transfer movements for the summer.[b]

Re: AC MILAN :: ROSSANERRI
Serie A - Milan into Champions League
AC Milan booked their place in the Champions League group stages and gave Paolo Maldini a winning send-off as they beat Fiorentina 2-0.
The seven-time European champions risked missing out on a top three finish and having to negotiate two qualifying rounds in Europe next season if they lost but goals from Kaka and Pato were enough to secure a win and third place in Serie A.Fiorentina finished fourth following the defeat and will play those two qualifying rounds next season while Juventus claimed second spot with a 2-0 home win over Lazio.
But while Maldini was afforded a great reception from both sets of fans in Florence to celebrate his 24 years as a Milan player, coach Carlo Ancelotti made what will likely be a more discreet departure.
He too is likely to leave Milan to join Chelsea next season, despite Milan's fans chanting for him to stay throughout the game.
Fiorentina, who had to win to take a top three finish, started brightly and former Milan forward Alberto Gilardino got on the end of a left-wing cross on 22-minutes but headed wide under pressure.
Just two minutes later former Arsenal star Mathieu Flamini grazed the bar with a vicious shot from 22 yards as Milan demonstrated their potency.
Fiorentina had a good shout for a penalty on 42 minutes when Giuseppe Favalli appeared to haul down Gilardino but the referee gave a foul the other way.
On 48 minutes the striker went close again as he curled a shot just past the post with the outside of his right boot.
But on 55 minutes Milan took the lead with a simple move as Andrea Pirlo released Gianluca Zambrotta down the right and although his cross was blocked by Alessandro Gamberini, Kaka followed up to slide home the ball.
Filippo Inzaghi should have finished things on 62 minutes but he blazed over the bar with only French goalkeeper Sebastien Frey to beat.
However substitute Pato did seal the victory on 76 minutes as he beat the offside trap and then chipped Frey as the Frenchman went to ground.
Champions Inter Milan came back from 3-2 down to beat Atalanta 4-3 at the San Siro as Portugal veteran Luis Figo also bowed out from the game.
Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimvoic also took the golden boot award after his two goals took his tally to 25 this season.
Czech veteran Pavel Nedved was another player departing as he played his final game for Juventus, with two Vincenzo Iaquinta goals securing their victory.
Torino joined Reggina and Lecce in being relegated to Serie B after they lost 3-2 at AS Roma and Bologna won 3-1 at home to Catania.

Real Madrid Club Doctor In Brazil To Conduct Kaka Medical - Report
Los Merengues have reportedly sent Juan Carlos Hernandez to South America to assess the physical fitness of the Brazilian ahead of his expected transfer...
7 Jun 2009 16:19:47
Real Madrid have reportedly instructed club doctor Juan Carlos Hernandez to travel to Brazil to conduct a medical on Milan midfielder Kaka, ahead of his mooted move to the Spanish giants this week.
The AC Milan star was an influential force in his nations’ emphatic 4-0 win over Uruguay, a victory that strengthened their qualification aspirations for next summers’ World Cup.
And, as the player returned to Recife, Globoesporte.com comments that the 27-year old met with Hernandez to conduct the necessary examinations.
Kaka received authorisation from the Brazilian football association to undergo the tests and, if they are successful, he will move closer to moving to Los Blancos for what is expected to be an exorbitant fee.
Madrid and new chairman Florentino Perez are set to pay Milan €65m to secure the services of their prized asset, making the transfer second only to the €70m Juventus received for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.
Kaka remained coy about the possibility of the move, choosing only to answer questions regarding Brazil's victory and he also refused to acknowledge any contact with any representative of the Spanish club.
Despite this, he is still widely expected to be announced as a Madrid player at some point this week and the arrival of Dr. Hernandez in South America merely adds more substance to this belief.
Last week, Goal.com reported that Chelsea were on the verge of hijacking the transfer and taking the player to the English Premier League (see story). But now, it seems that Perez is moving closer to landing the first ‘Galactico’ of his new tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Berlusconi: Kaka Might Not Leave; Trezeguet Might Arrive
Berlusconi wants to keep the hope of holding on to Kaka alive, but has already set his mind on the possible arrivals.
5 Jun 2009 18:31:37
Milan president Silvio Berlusconi does not want to confirm that Riccardo Kaka will leave the club before Sunday, when he will be discussing the Brazilian player's future.
Berlusconi wants to assess the situation before he throws in the towel as he is still hoping that he can keep the player for more years to come.
"On Sunday we shall have a transfer meeting, in which we will decide Ricky's future," declared the Milan president to Milan Channel. "It's not certain that he leaves."
Berlusconi was then asked who would be signed with the money received from the Kaka sale.
"A striker would arrive," he continued. "Robinho? No. Malouda? Neither. Eto'o? It's difficult."
The latest indications are that Milan want to sign Juventus striker David Trezeguet, with his agent, Antonio Caliendo, hinting that more will be known after this evening.
"I have an appointment with the Bianconeri's director this evening," declared the player's agent to Radio Kiss Kiss.
"David still has two years of contract, but I want to know from the club their intentions about my client. Then a fundamental opinion will need to be expressed by the coach."
