Comeback kid Joe Cole is ready to take the pitch in Chelsea’s Champions League campaign.

The midfielder, who has been out for the past eight months with a serious knee injury, will be asked to fill the void left by John Obi Mikel and Michael Ballack in the centre of Carlo Ancelotti’s line-up against Cyprus’ Apoel Nicosia on Wednesday night.

Cole has started just once since returning from injury, in the Carling Cup, but Ancelotti is set to use the England international in their second group stage match.

It has been 10 months since Cole last tasted European action and about 12 months since he last scored in the competition.

Chelsea keeper Cech feels penalty decision too harsh

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech believes the penalty and red card decision against him in the loss to Wigan on Saturday was far too harsh.

The Czech international was given his marching orders for a second-half challenge on Hugo Rodallega that brought about a penalty to give the Latics a 2-1 lead and he feels he was harshly done by.

"The penalty call was too strict," Cech told his personal website.

"It surprised me that I was sent off, because I was not the last player. Ashley Cole was running behind my back."

Cech admitted that the Blues performed poorly but also hinted that the penalty may have been the catalyst for the Wigan win.

"We played very badly," added Cech. "We were not going along with the tasks we had set before the match.

"In the second half our performance improved, we equalised but then the penalty came."
